Meeting topic: Focusing on lambing day
First-generation farmers Chris and Jen Vervoort know the success of their operation depends on their ability to provide the best care possible for their flock. To help them achieve this goal, the couple uses, 100% CIDR’s and scheduled lambing days. This program allows them to adjust their schedule around lambings.
Chris and Jen have a flock of approx. 350 cross bred ewes using Dorset and Suffolk sires. The Vervoort’s work in a housed system, using an accelerated lambing program. Planning with CIDR’s is a major tool used in their operation. Currently the prime focus is time management and producing consistent uniform groups of market lambs.
Along side the sheep they operate a 200 head veal finishing barn, a custom hoof trimming business, and a handful of other sidelines. Jen maintains a full time off farm job and the farm currently employs 1 full time person.
Refreshments and social time will be at the end of our meeting.
