Policy Updates & Issues

Stay informed about key initiatives shaping Ontario’s sheep farming industry. Ontario Sheep Farmers (OSF) is committed to addressing issues and advocating for policies that support our producers. Some of the policy updates and issues we are currently focused on include:

Agrivoltaics

Agrivoltaics presents a promising opportunity to integrate solar energy production with agricultural activities. OSF advocates for policies that prioritize sheep grazing under solar installations as a sustainable land-use strategy. This dual-use approach can benefit both energy and farming industries. Stay tuned for updates on partnerships and pilot projects.

Farmer Wellness

The well-being of farmers is critical to the sustainability of the sheep industry. OSF offers resources to support mental health, including access to crisis lines, wellness programs, and partnerships with organizations like OMAFRA for mental health first aid.

Traceability

OSF champions traceability systems like the Canadian Sheep Identification Program (CSIP), ensuring transparency and enhancing food safety. These systems help safeguard animal health and protect market access for Ontario lamb and wool.

Livestock Guardian Dogs

As part of efforts to address predation, OSF supports the responsible use of livestock guardian dogs. Recent updates to Ontario's standards for outdoor dogs include specific exemptions for livestock guardians, acknowledging their unique role.
